Should You Work as a Contractor or an Employee?

Here’s What You Need to Know

It starts with a text in the group chat:
“Just signed a new gig contract. Six months, remote, $$$. No benefits though. Worth it?”

Cue the flood of opinions.
“Freedom!”
“Sketchy.”
“Wish I had that kind of flexibility…”
“Hope you don’t get sick!”

Sound familiar?

Whether you’re just out of school, mid-career and looking to pivot, or trying to break into a new industry, figuring out if you should work as a contractor or an employee can feel like one more confusing decision in an already overwhelming job search. And while everyone seems to have an opinion, the answer really comes down to: What works best for you, your goals, and your lifestyle?

Let’s break it down.

What’s the Difference, Really?

Contractor (a.k.a. Independent, Freelance, Gig Work):

  • You work on a project or short-term basis.
  • You invoice for your time or deliverables.
  • You’re not on payroll—no EI, CPP, or tax deductions taken off.
  • You don’t get benefits like paid vacation or employer-sponsored health coverage.
  • You’re your own boss (but also your own HR, IT, and Finance departments).

Employee (Full-Time or Part-Time):

  • You have an employer who deducts taxes and contributes to things like CPP and EI.
  • You might get benefits—health, dental, paid time off, RRSP matching, etc.
  • You usually have more job security and structure.
  • You’re expected to follow company policies and work set hours.

The Emotional Side of the Decision

Imagine this: you have two offers. One is a full-time job with a modest salary, benefits, and a clear career ladder. The other, a juicy 12-month contract with better pay, a cool brand name, and way more autonomy—but no guarantees beyond the year.

You call us in full decision paralysis. “What if I choose wrong? What if I burn out? What if the contract doesn’t get extended and I’m stuck updating my resume again in 10 months?”

Here’s what I’ll tell you: There’s no “wrong choice,” only an informed one.

Contractor Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Flexibility and freedom (hello, mid-day yoga or travel plans).
  • Often higher hourly pay.
  • Exposure to different industries and teams.

Cons:

  • No benefits or job security.
  • You pay your own taxes and manage your own business stuff.
  • Gaps between contracts can feel stressful.
  • Harder to build long-term momentum within a single company.

Employee Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Stability, structure, and predictability.
  • Benefits and legal protections.
  • Easier to access promotions and mentorship.

Cons:

  • Less flexibility.
  • Potential for burnout in toxic or rigid environments.
  • May feel like you’re “stuck” or not growing fast enough.

So… How Do You Decide?

Start by asking yourself:

  • Do I need stable income right now, or can I take on some risk?
  • Am I building a specific career path, or am I exploring?
  • Do I want benefits like extended health or parental leave coverage?
  • How comfortable am I with administrative tasks (invoicing, taxes, etc.)?

Also: What do your long-term goals look like? Contract work can be an amazing way to build your portfolio, test-drive new industries, and make connections. But if you’re craving mentorship, structure, and a steady progression, traditional employment might be the better bet, for now.

And if you’re still unsure? You don’t have to figure it out alone.
